Backscattering Linear Depolarization Ratio of Smoke Aerosols From Biomass Burning

The backscattering linear depolarization ratio (LDR) is dependent on the particle shape and composition and can be differed among diverse particle types. Previous studies have shown significant variation in measured LDRs of smoke in the literature without considering the external mixing state of the particle population in the LDR calculations. We conducted the prescribed burning experiment in China, and measured the LDR of emitted smoke from biomass burning using lidar on site. Our measurement revealed wide and rapid variations in the LDR of newly emitted smoke. We used numerical simulations to calculate the LDR of the smoke particle population to interpret the measured results and those reported in the literature. Taking into account externally mixed ellipsoidal organic carbon (OC) particles, the smoke LDR is very sensitive to the size distribution and morphology of the externally mixed OC. The results can well explain the LDR of smoke in the field observations. This study generates useful information for the accurate measurement and assessment of the LDR of smoke.
